Global online advertising will rise by 12.4% during 2010 according to a study from MAGNAGLOBAL, a division of IPG’s Mediabrands.

Media spendings will hit $61.0 billion dollars globally with paid search as the most important component of online advertising. In 2010 this segment will account for $29.8 billion, i.e. 48,9% of the total spendings, up by 16.5% over 2009 totals. Google is the global leader in paid search, but in the markets of China and Russia paid search providers are domestic players Baidu and Yandex.

All other online advertising will account for $31.2 billion, up by 8.7%. This market segment is more diffused, with a few global portals, as Yahoo and Microsoft. Most of the revenue is generated at regionally strong publishers, that are often associated with print publications. Read more

According to a new study from Nielsen social media users grow steadily on a worldwide basis: in April 2010 22% of the internet usage time has been used to engage with social media.

22% sounds like not really big? You have to take into account this report is on a global scale. Here are a few more findings:

75% of Internet users worldwide visit a social network or blog when they go online — that’s a 24% increase over the same period last year. And the average international user spends 66% more time using these sites than a year ago – a growth from 3 and a half hours last year to 6 hours in April 2010. Read more

A new study from Forrester Research is predicting a shrinking ad market over the next five years, with a very positive prediction for online advertising: they expect the U.S. interactive ad market to reach $55 billion during that timeframe, meaning marketers will go from spending 12 percent of their total ad budgets online in 2009, to 21 percent by 2014!
